The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication awards scholarships and outstanding student awards each spring at a special banquet honoring journalism majors. Scholarships are based on academic performance and financial need. Applications for scholarships become available in February and are restricted to majors only. Below is a list of the most sought-after scholarships, made possible by donations from our generous alumni and friends.

Craig Hadley Memorial Scholarship. Up to $750. This scholarship is provided by the Gordon, Monica & Craig Hadley Memorial Academic Trust Fund, established in honor of the late publisher of Hadley Newspapers Inc. This goes to a journalism student interested in community newspaper journalism.

Gordon Hadley Memorial Scholarship. Up to $750. This scholarship is provided by the Gordon, Monica & Craig Hadley Memorial Academic Trust Fund, established in honor of the late publisher of Hadley Newspapers Inc. It goes to a journalism student who has achieved distinction in newspaper journalism.

Norman Lee Memorial Broadcast News Scholarship. $100 and up with potential for more than one scholarship being given. Donations come from friends of the late Norman Lee and members of the media. Lee, long-time news director of KINS, died in 1975. This scholarship is awarded to a journalism student who shows promise and interest in broadcast journalism.

Herschel M. "Pete" Wilson Broadcast News Scholarship. $100 and up with potential for more than one scholarship being given. This scholarship is awarded to a journalism student who shows promise and interest in broadcast journalism.

Journalism Alumni Scholarships. $100 and up with potential for more than one scholarship being given. Alumni of the Humboldt Journalism and Mass Communication Department established this scholarship fund. The main criterion for this award will be scholarship; applicants must have at least a 3.0 overall GPA as well as at least a 3.0 GPA in Humboldt journalism classes.

Journalism Department Scholarship. $100 and up with potential for more than one scholarship being given. This award is based on financial need, as well as academic performance and journalistic promise. It is financed primarily by contributions from friends of the department.

John Muir Award. $100 and up. This award goes to a journalism major or minor who has shown interest in and commitment to journalism and/or public relations in environmental issues.

Press Freedom Fund. $100 and up Awarded to journalism student who has displayed outstanding commitment to First Amendment issues; other considerations include grade in Mass Communication Law, financial need and overall GPA. Applicant must submit a one-page summary of philosophy and activities related to press freedom.

Wayne K. Miller Memorial Photojournalism Scholarship. $250 and up will be awarded to the Journalism and Mass Communication Department's most promising still photojournalist. Requires the submission of a portfolio of five published prints and tear sheets. Scholarship requires a 3.0 GPA in Humboldt journalism courses.

Florence McClary Memorial Scholarship. $2,000 or potential for more than one scholarship of lesser amounts being given. This scholarship is awarded to continuing full-time journalism majors, with a minimum GPA of 3.2, who have worked on the Osprey student magazine or The Lumberjack student newspaper. Donated by Maclyn and Ann McClary in memory of Professor McClary's mother, who encouraged him to pursue his education and career in journalism.
