Matt Drange

Biography: 

Matt Drange teaches Media Law. He's an investigative journalist based in San Francisco, currently with Business Insider. Drange previously reported for Forbes magazine and the Center for Investigative Reporting. He's received dozens of journalism awards, and most recently was honored with the First Amendment Coalition's Free Speech & Open Government Award. In 2019, Drange was named the best young business journalist in the country by the Society for Advancing Business Editing and Writing. He frequently leads public records workshops for the Society of Professional Journalists, northern California chapter. Drange's work has been published by ProPublica, The Guardian, the San Francisco Chronicle and elsewhere. He began his career covering cops and courts at the Eureka Times-Standard. Drange graduated from Cal Poly Humboldt in 2011 and holds a master's degree from the Columbia Journalism School. He lives in the Bay Area with his wife, a fellow Humboldt alum, and their dog, Violet.
