Student journalists, yearbook staffs, journalism teachers and student media advisers, please join us for Journalism Day 2019 and the 2nd Annual Northern California Jackie Award ceremony. The event is open to all middle/junior and high school teachers and students in Northern California – even if your school doesn’t have school news media or a yearbook.
We’ve planned plenty of hands-on activities for both beginners and seasoned scholastic journalists. The day also provides a chance to network with other student publications, win fun prizes and be honored for your hard work at the HSU Jackies – our award ceremony for middle and high school student publications in Mendocino, Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity counties.
We’ll have snacks!
Register here for this free afternoon. If you preregister, we can make you a spiffy HSU Journalism Press Pass with your name and photo.
Student participants can choose from several hands-on workshops led by Journalism and Mass Communications faculty. Workshops include visual storytelling, investigative reporting, interviewing tips and editing media on your smart phone. The afternoon concludes with the “Jackies” Award ceremony, recognizing excellence in high school journalism.
Participants will tour student media offices, including The Lumberjack and KRFH-FM student radio.
High school journalism and yearbook teams are invited to enter online, broadcast and print media including yearbooks, websites, student magazines, social media, videos and newspapers for our HSU Media Award -- the Jackie.
